Maj Gen. (Retd.) Jamshed Ayaz Khan

President, Institute of Regional Studies, Islamabad

Jamshed Ayaz Khan took over as the President of the Institute of Regional Studies, Islamabad in Apri1 2002. As the head of this prestigious institute, he oversees the matters related to protocol and administration as well as research and analysis on regional and international affairs, delivers lectures, gives interviews on topical issues to national/ international media, attends regional, national and international seminars, conferences & roundtables etc. .

Author of two books “Reflection on Matters of War and Peace”, and Asia – Search for Security and Cooperation”, he regularly contributes in national and international journals as well as newspapers. His special focus is on South Asia and security issues. He has appeared as an expert / analyst in various TV and Radio programs and is among the most sought after analysts of Pakistan with regular appearances in International Channels. He has been a regular participant to a number of policy relevant academic events. The most recent include: “The 4th IISS – Shangri-La Dialogue”, 3-5 June 2005, organized by International Institute for Strategic Studies (UK), in Singapore, “Weapons of Mass Destruction: South Asian Perspectives”, 14 March 2005, organized by WMDC and Delhi Policy Group in New Delhi, India, “The 5th , 6th and 7th South Asian Security Conference: Emerging Challenges and Opportunities”, organized by International Institute for Strategic Studies (UK) in Muscat, Oman in 2004, 05 and 06 , “The 7th Asia Security Conference”, 27-29 January 2005, organized by Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis, in New Delhi, India , NDC-NDU Strategic Dialogue” 8-12 December 2003, in Washington, USA, “South Asia Situation and China’s South Asia Policy”, 9-10 November 2004, organized by Shanghai Institute for International Studies, in Shanghai, China.

Before joining the Institute, he served as Additional Secretary Defense Production (DP) Division of the Ministry of Defense from 1999-2001, where he mainly dealt with budget formulation of organizations under the DP Division, was responsible to monitor procurement for all three Services of Pakistan Armed Forces, was responsible for overseeing the Indigenous Development of Defense Equipment including Research. He also presided over Conferences of Bilateral Consultative Groups on Defense Matters between Pakistan and other Countries. And also monitored and oversaw organization of first ever Pakistan Armed Forces Exhibition of Defense Equipment — IDEAS 2000.

He retired as a Major General in 2001 after serving for approximately 39 years in the Army including eleven years as a General Officer. He has the honor of taking part in Rann of Cutch Operations on the First Day of service and also in the Indo-Pakistan Wars of 1965 and 1971. As an officer of the Pakistan Army, he served on a variety of appointments including command, staff and instructional. The latter included an assignment on the Directing Staff at the prestigious Command and Staff College, Quetta.

He is a recipient of two Commendation Cards for his dedication by the Army Chief; and was also decorated with Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military) for his long and meritorious service.

An enthusiastic player of Tennis and one time Pakistan’s Junior Champion, continues to enjoy a good game of tennis after a busy and tiresome day. He is married to Dr. Nosheen Jamshed, an educationist by profession and has three children and lives in Islamabad.

He is also the member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, London, the Asia Society, New York and the Rotary Club International. His name is also listed in the International Who’s Who Historical Society’s list 2006-07.
